The Flora Broderie Espadrille

When Penelope’s daughter Gemma got engaged she could picture the shoes she wanted to wear for the big day: ‘I’ve always liked a chunky platform style heel, and I’m so inspired by vintage pieces and colourful prints from the 70’s, so I knew I wanted to bring these two elements together and make something that felt very me. And would be comfortable all night long!’ So Mum, Penelope and sister, Africa, came together with Gemma to design the Gemma platform and Chelsea Espadrille - featuring a beautiful, 70’s inspired, PC print ‘I fell in love with the print as soon as I saw it! And the fact that we’d created it together, made it even more special. It was also a moment that then really inspired the rest of the wedding, and my tip for anyone planning their own, would be find a colour palette or design you love and let that inspire you - because it meant the day felt so cohesive and made decisions so much easier!’ This print flowed through all the colours of the weekend; the flowers, the table design and all the extra touches. Gemma’s wedding shoes were a beautiful pair of cotton platforms made in this custom print, and designed on a super comfy cushion sole, so they could be worn all day and night. And her 13 bridesmaids picked their own dresses, but in shades of pink, yellow, orange and green, to match the colours of their own printed wedge espadrilles. Even the tiny flower boys and girls, who were babes in arms, had bloomers made to match, and a pram lining for Gemma’s nephew, Noah. And any leftover material was, in true PC fashion not wasted, but draped over the chairs and sofas that were dotted around the wedding. To ensure the guests didn't feel left out, Gemma and Jake gifted flat espadrilles to everyone as a welcome gift. With pairs made in their wedding print for the girls and a khaki for the boys. ‘It was so lovely to see our guests wearing the espadrilles across the weekend. It meant the print really became a special part of the celebration itself.’  The pair married in Mas Sendra, Spain - a place close to the Chilvers’ family heart, as it is near to where Gemma’s parents met, and also where she and Jake got engaged, at their family holiday home. Penelope looked beautiful in her High Horsebit Leather Clogs, and our groom Jake wore a pair of the PC Flintwood Chukka Boots, which went perfectly with his dapper green suit. Guests were treated to a whole host of amazing local delicacies including jamon Iberico, fresh seafood and a traditional Bisbalenc cake to keep everyone fueled on the dancefloor. And of course the locally made shoes - hand delivered by the makers themselves, who were based a few miles up the road! Customers can now shop the whole edit over on the site. Yolke and Penelope Chilvers were drawn together over a mutual love of print and admiration for each other’s work, so it was an absolute pleasure to collaborate with YOLKE on this season’s Penelope Chilvers x YOLKE capsule collection of Blossom print. On May 18th we opened up our Mayfair store doors to welcome in the summer and to celebrate the launch of this collaboration. We were lucky to host this party on one of the hottest days of the year and so YOLKE’s Blossom print radiated all the way down Duke Street. With music by DJs Mary Charteris and Ben Bridgewater, and guests dressed head to toe in Penelope Chilvers and YOLKE, the store was alive with chatter and laughter. Fresh strawberries and cream were served on the pavement with everyone taking full advantage of the warm, late afternoon sunshine. Delicious drinks were provided by Della Vite Prosecco, Maison Mirabeau and Forest Road Brewing Company Ltd. The guest list included the likes of Lady Amelia Windsor, Saffron Hocking, Hermione Corfield, Anna Brewster, Kesewa Aboah, Maria Kastani, & Zeena Shah. We were also delighted to be joined by Noella Coursaris Musunka, founder of the Malaika Foundation, a non-profit organisation with a mission to empower young girls and their communities in sub-Saharan Africa with both brands donating 10% of children’s sales to the Foundation in support of their brilliant work. A fitting backdrop for these women's boot styles, as each piece has been designed and inspired by wilderness and adventure and is crafted to look perfectly at home in a country setting. We had such fun styling core collectables like the Tassel and the Inclement as we scrambled through hedgerows and across farmyards in search of the perfect shots; embodying the go anywhere, do anything ethos of our products. Vanessa is a poster girl for the PC Pioneers aesthetic of easy elegance, and was so naturally at home in our products. All of Vanessa’s looks were styled by Penelope’s daughter Gemma Sort-Chilvers, and in partnership with beautiful British heritage pieces from our friends Hunt and Hall, Anna Lascata and Troy. Summer 2022 Collection Penelope’s Personal Memories of Summer Summer takes me to the Mediterranean coastline, where memories of holiday trips down a little cobbled lane to the local shoe shop remain golden. Bunches of jute, that I can still smell today, would hang from the ceiling and shoe boxes were stacked high. It was a holiday treat to choose a pair of rustic espadrilles each summer, in a new favourite colour. Perhaps this holiday memento led to a life-long love of the Catalan espardeña.* When I spend time on the coast now, one of my greatest pleasures is to watch the local Catalans dance the Sardana, a folk-dance dating back to the 16th century. Typically danced in soft soled espadrilles, this dance is symbolic of people coming together, in a circle to become stronger and united. For this summer’s campaign, we honoured this ancient tradition by gathering locals to dance the Sardana wearing our new collection of Dali espadrilles. These velvet-ribboned espadrilles are our summer classics and the most versatile style for the warmer months. They can be worn informally and for an occasion as they are quiet-footed and firm on any garden party lawn. I am passionate about the traditions and craftsmanship of my beloved Spain and it’s a constant source of design inspiration. Our summer sandals and accessories are made authentically, by skilled artisans who bring this ancient knowledge to work with them. It’s in their blood and it’s also in mine and it’s that passion and pride that drives me and reaffirms our ethos as a back to slow brand, making things well with no corners cut. I hope you enjoy!

Our equestrian roots are at the heart of Penelope Chilvers, from our Spanish riding boots to our Horsebit Clog, we find creative inspiration in the art and leatherwork of saddlery itself and the artisans that work so beautifully in this space. It also takes us right back to the very beginning of our story. A time when our founder and creative director, Penelope, lived in the city of Barcelona—working as a painter and designer on amazing projects such as the restoration of the Picasso Museum— and spending her lunch breaks riding in the Collserola national park, in the hills above the city. To do this, she always wore her bespoke Spanish riding boots; snug-fitting, handmade, butter-soft leather boots, layered with intricate detailing and handmade by inspirational artisans. These were boots designed for kicking up dust and living life, and they fuelled an idea in Penelope. Working alongside the local makers she knew so well, she designed and bought back, a small collection of these riding boots to sell in the U.K, and from here Penelope Chilvers began... A piece of Penelope Chilvers footwear is an investment, which if cared for will last well over a decade, ask Penelope’s husband who’s worn the same pair for 18 years! Classic designs are important to us and our equestrian style is the heart of this; pieces that never feel dated, or age-appropriated, but timeless—with an easy, always-in-style aesthetic. Across the years, our horsebit details, intricate studwork and folk-inspired weaves have held their own; slow fashion in lieu of fast, always elegant, always relevant. And we’re not the only brand to take equestrian inspiration, the horsebit has been a part of big fashion house collections across the years; Gucci, Chloe and Todds, have all found beauty in its romantic shape and adventurous connotations. Our most popular piece last season, the Horsebit Clog joins this narrative; thoughtfully designed to capture the beautiful slip on/slip off nature of a nomadic gaucho-style existence, but in the most stylish of ways. This shoe has stolen the hearts of so many customers because it’s one of the most versatile pieces in our collection. Beeble is an artisanal, honey-based whiskey brand, founded by amateur beekeeper Nicola Arkell and her family. Originally started as a waste saving solution, Beeble has gone from strength to strength, creating a real buzz in the whiskey industry! Nicola and her team are now responsible for over 8 million bees throughout Wiltshire, an amazing number at a time when the honeybee is in decline. What attracted you to beekeeping in the first place? My husband was given a beehive by his friend Tanya, as a surprise. He was a little overwhelmed by the prospect, but I was intrigued! So, I went on a course and trained to become a beekeeper. I totally loved the experience and haven’t looked back since, Tanya still remains a great friend and of course one of Beeble’s first customers! How did this grow into Beeble? I noticed that so much honey was wasted whilst harvesting - bearing in mind that a bee only makes half a teaspoon of honey in it’s lifetime, I thought there must be a better way! I put the sticky honey frames into a cauldron of whisky, left them for a month, filtered out all of the bad bits and it tasted great! From there Beeble was born. Taba, my daughter, designed the label – so it was a family affair, all dreamed up from my kitchen in Wiltshire… What have you found the best part of starting a brand? I have loved being part of a team. I was an art lecturer/teacher, and artist before and it has been a great new experience to work with other creative folk. We work really well together and the Beeble team still makes all of our decisions unanimously — which I’m really proud of! What has been more challenging? I think as you work in part of a bigger team, and you’re building a brand, you have to learn to be patient about how long ideas and plans take to materialise! I am quite impatient and this pandemic has meant one has to be super patient as all imports and processes have been so delayed, so that’s been a challenge. What advice would you give to others? I think there is so much truth in the fact that if you have a dream, you shouldn’t just sit there, we are all so much more capable than we realise. Have courage and seize the adventure! Success often comes from believing that you can succeed and doing everything possible to make it a reality, and Beeble is proof of that! What can we expect to see from Beeble in the next few years? I’m really excited about some new products that we have in the pipeline. Over the next few months we will be launching a Honey Vodka, and a Honey Rum. We are also launching our first non-alcoholic liquor, which I am really proud of - Beeble Garden. It has a soft gingery punch to it, and is completely delicious! Our shoes are designed for adventure - where would you go if you could go anywhere or do anything? I think my adventure would, of course, be beekeeping focused! Beeble are hoping to build a beekeeping school in Wiltshire and so I would love to launch that and get it up and running! The mission is to give more people the chance to learn more about bees and how to keep them in a sustainable way. 4 December – Penelope Chilvers New York Dog Walk For the first time ever, we took our annual Penelope Chilvers Dog Walk all the way to New York City, as part of our US Road Trip.  Guests and their pups met at McCarren Park, on what turned out to be a crisp, sunny winter's morning - the perfect weather for a dog walk! People came dressed in their favourite Penelope Chilvers women's boots, and their dogs in their most stylish Penelope Chilvers accessories. As well as the two styles from our third capsule collection with the fabulous India Hicks; The Grove Cowboy Boot and the Riding Tassel Boot in Slate. India herself attended, styling the Riding Boot with a causal yet chic jeans and blazer look. This year we partnered with Bideawee, an animal shelter in the United States who have been providing shelter, care, and compassion to homeless animals helping them to find their forever homes for more than 100 years. Their team brought along three of their adorable adoptable puppies; Leland, Evie, and Sienna, to join us on the walk. The sweetest, most well-behaved dogs stole the hearts of all our guests, including Gemma who herself said she wanted to take one home! India Hicks Gemma Sort Chilvers After the walk, guests joined Penelope for breakfast, tea, and coffee at the Arlo Williamsburg Water Tower. The stunning view from the tower had 360-degree views of New York, seeing all the way to Manhattan and Brooklyn. Guests stayed and chatted amongst each other, admiring the stunning views of the city. One of our favourite moments of this year was re-opening the door of our Ledbury Road store. As the brightly painted facades shook off their shutters for good, the cherry trees came out to bloom and the street finally looked itself again - a colourful homage to our renewed lease of life... Notting Hill is a eccentric village of its own nestled within the city of London — it's filled with lots of smaller, independent retailers, beautiful antique shops and wonderful restaurants and bars. So to celebrate the people who make our neighbourhood and the businesses they've built, we’ve put together a little guide for an ideal day in the area. Wanderlust Golborne Road is one of the few pockets of Notting Hill that remains quietly under the radar and a bit of a haven for those in the know. The ideal street for a mid-morning stroll, we recommend Aesop for its stylish beauty essentials and Folk for well-made signature staples with clean lines and lots of linen. Finish your stroll with a visit to Trove, a great spot filled with beautiful homewares and antique pieces, perfect for easy mid-morning browsing. Lunch Spot With our neighbour Ottolenghi, this Ledbury Road restaurant is an ideal place to pause and relax, with an incredible selection of well-made dishes and amazing local produce, all brought together with that signature Middle Eastern style. What’s more, you’re then perfectly placed to come and drop in, as our Penelope Chilvers store is on the opposite side of the road – the perfect digestif… Treasure Hunting No trip to Notting Hill is complete without a visit to Portobello Market, one of the most famous markets in the world and a veritable trove of vintage treasure. The market has a special place in our heart. As big believers in sustainable shopping, we feature pieces that are sourced and borrowed from the stalls here in lots of our campaign shoots, and many of the businesses know us all by name! We recommend heading for the stalls under the canopy and working your way back from there. Golden Hour Perfectly placed for a post Portobello browse is our dinner and drinks recommendation, Gold. The food has a European feel, but all served with a modern, exciting twist and incredible flavours. Whilst the stylish plant-filled interiors feel elegant and easy, and the cocktail menu is filled with fresh, original signatures to keep it interesting well into the night…

"Each year, we work with a family-run espadrille factory in the arid sierras of Murcia that has generations of experience working with woven jute. Though we introduce new designs, colourways and embellishments to our espadrille collection every summer, there are three rather special satin additions this year, each of which features intricate floral embroidery." - Penelope Chilvers Both comfortable and breathable enough to wear all day long, thanks to their natural jute sole, espadrilles remain a summer staple year after year. This year, we have added three new styles to our espadrille collection which are perhaps our most elegant to date. The Alegra, High Gala and Mary Jane Embroidered Satin Espadrilles feature a soft satin upper and bespoke floral embroidery, bringing an elevated feel to a traditionally informal shoe. Penelope drew the inspiration for the floral designs on our embroidered satin espadrilles from a shawl she found and fell in love with. She commissioned Maria José – who is a part of a talented community of women who've been hand embroidering and restoring Spanish shawls known as 'mantones de Manila' for generations – to develop the bespoke floral design for us. Maria began by pencil-drawing the design on to paper and tracing it onto the satin fabric, before embroidering the satin by hand with cotton thread. This artisanal process took her a total of six weeks to complete, and Penelope loved visiting her regularly to watch the design come to life. We then worked with a family-run espadrille factory to replicate the hand-embroidered designs onto our shoe satins to ensure optimum durability. Mayfair is one of those places that has an air of magic about it; bordering leafy Hyde Park and filled with Georgian houses, luxury stores and some of the city’s most famous restaurants and hotels — it is a place that’s all about pleasure. So this little black book is a guide to some of its most fabulous spots to eat, drink and visit! A chance to really celebrate this neighbourhood and its long-awaited return... The Places You’ll Go… Selfridges is such a big part of Mayfair’s story. The trailblazer for retail as we know it — started by Harry Gordon Selfridge, the store was designed to make shopping feel like a luxury rather than a chore, and years later, it still does just that! Perfectly placed opposite our Duke Street store, we’d always recommend dropping by visiting the two together! This month don’t miss their Hurr Collective Pop Up on the 3rd floor, giving customers a chance to rent pieces handpicked by Selfridges buying team starting from £20.00 for a four day rental, a marriage of style and sustainability! Marchesi 1824 is one of Milan's oldest cafés, so-called after the year it opened, and it came to Mount Street a couple of years ago. The brand, now owned by Prada, is the epitome of style; filled with antique-inspired vitrines, mosaic tiles, marble-topped tables and delicious green velvet chairs. Handcrafted treats include fluffy, chantilly cream-filled cakes, truly fluffy meringues, which happen to be enormous, and their infamous Italian panettone. Alongside all these delicacies they happen to do the fanciest flat whites in London making them the perfect spot for a morning coffee break. Post coffee don't miss a wander down Mount Street, which has some of the biggest names in luxury fashion gracing beautiful listed shop fronts on either side. The Royal Academy is one of our favourite places to visit, and as galleries go, it’s pretty breathtaking! Framed by a grand entrance, high ceilings and a beautiful courtyard, it’s the perfect balance of grandeur, without being stuffy. A true working academy, the space is an oasis of creativity tucked behind all the hustle and bustle of Piccadilly. And this Summer the academy is exhibiting one of our favourite painters — David Hockney. The Arrival of Spring is a series of pieces painted by Hockney on his Ipad whilst he was locked down in Normandy, featuring his signature paint flicks and colours exuding all the hopefulness of Spring. Berkeley Square, one of London’s most beautiful garden Squares and a treasured haven of green for those in the know. Surrounded by beautiful buildings, London institutions such as Annabels and just a stones throw from all the bustle of Shepherd's Market. But, its best feature are its benches, each one is dedicated to the memory of people who have enjoyed the space over the years. Known as the Benches for Berkeley Square project, the memorials make it a great spot to spend fifteen minutes walking through, reading the plaques and getting lost in all the bygone glamour of Mayfair. Claridge's, the Fumoir bar at Claridge's is one of those must-visit London spots, a great place to sneak off to for a pre-show cocktail or to celebrate life’s little triumphs. Hidden behind a discreet glass door at the hotel’s famous entrance there is something quite voyeuristic about the Fumoir — it feels like a place in which you can really get lost in. With dark cosy corners and plush interiors, all framed by aubergine gilded walls and vintage flecked mirrors, it’s opulence at it’s finest and a great spot to sip on a truly fancy cocktail. Cecconi's always manages to make us feel like we’re actually in Italy, their striped awnings, sumptuous green bar stools, beautiful lighting and bustling service team transport you to Milan, all from a little corner spot of Burlington Gardens. Our recommended spot for lunch or dinner — for lunch dine outside on their pavement style al fresco seats, for dinner get the full experience indoors nestled between marble, leather and dark wood. All of the pasta dishes are a masterpiece and you don’t want to miss their signature burrata either.

While designing this summer’s collection, I watched the seasons change from my studio window without interruption. In early spring a pheasant knocked on my window with its beak every evening at dusk while I drew. As I walked the surrounding hills and enjoyed warm evenings in our rose garden accompanied by the soporific sounds of doves cooing, I sensed that this collection was destined to reflect the countryside around me. From the delicate hues of roses, periwinkles, and hydrangeas to the natural tones of the landscape, all have inspired the season and are depicted throughout this collection by the artist and wallpaper designer Floral Roberts. We hope this summer collection will instil a sense of optimism for the months ahead and awaken a bucolic state of mind and love for the natural world that is all around us. Our flagship store in Mayfair has had a refresh! Newly washed walls in the calmest of Pre-Raphaelite greens, upholstered panels of studded green suede, and a gallery wall showcasing personal memories of growing the brand over the years, and some inspiration from the archives. Moroccan lampshades fill the high ceilings, and a vintage leather sofa awaits you - designed to create a welcoming and calming retreat from the busy world outside. Duke Street sits amongst the most iconic and classical landmarks in Mayfair; leading from Selfridges to Grosvenor Square, with prestigious hotels like Claridges and The Connaught on our doorstep. It has always been my desire to create beautiful spaces to showcase our designs, inspired from all around the world. A specialist environment for our footwear, with each and every store designed as an escape from the urban planet around us. 'Back to slow'.

Inspired by the natural roots and English country garden aesthetic of our Summer collection, we gave ourselves a challenge — to source every look for the shoot from small, sustainable, brands. Our goal was to work with British designers, or brands with pieces available in the U.K, meaning we had more control over things like air miles and wastage. Our photoshoot stylist, Gemma Sort Chilvers (@gemma.sortchilvers), created an artistic midsummer-garden look and under her direction the campaign took on a narrative of its own. Becoming, not just as a moment for PC, but a moment for sustainable British design - celebrating the natural world and, via conscious and responsible styling, protecting it too. Her approach was to try and find people doing things that were slightly off the beaten track. Hunting down independent, up-and-coming names whose looks fed into her overall aesthetic: ‘I scoured Instagram, looking for brands turning waste products into materials and working with local people. I also reached out to brands I’d admired in the past and encouraged the team and friends to pass on any names they’d discovered along the way, so I ended up with a really eclectic, organic, group of people and ideas to work with’ We uncovered some amazing stories. Pairing our PCs with designers like Doone London, whose female-led focus really struck a chord with Gemma: ‘All their pieces are handmade in London; by women for women, and crucially, every style is breastfeeding friendly too, something I feel is so often overlooked...’ ELV Denim was another great find. They take unwanted jeans destined for landfill and turn them back into denim. Adhering to an ethos of zero waste and zero impact from start to finish. Their stylish designs look and feel brand new, without requiring any of the intensive farming techniques needed to generate cotton. To discover so many brands finding better routes to design felt inspiring. These companies are really paving the way for a more transparent future, which is something we as a team believe is possible. Fashion can often be painted as a competitive space, but we’re proud to work with brands who share our values and proud to be able to celebrate and credit them too. You will probably be familiar with Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali, but it's unlikely that you’ll be as familiar with his espadrille collection...or be aware that his summer shoe of choice was, almost exclusively, a lace up espadrille with a jute sole. Our aptly named Dali espadrilles are the PC tribute to this footnote in fashion — a genuine celebration of the Catalan heritage and pride these espadrilles represent. Each region still has their own specific style, defined by the shape, colour, or application of their ribbons! Our Dali is a piece of this history, a story of Spanish culture, made exclusively by Spanish artisans, using the same time-honoured traditions as they would have in Salvador's day. All our espadrilles are manufactured in Spain by master weavers and leather workers, using traditional production techniques and artisanal materials. 100% biodegradable they’re crafted from local materials, such as Mediterranean jute, which grows throughout the region. The jute is braided and handcrafted on a turntable, before being reinforced with a layer of natural rubber to make our signature comfy soles. The uppers are then attached using the same technique, hand-cut and hand-sewn from local linens, Raffia and butter-soft leathers. Before adding the final touch, in the form of our signature velvet ribbons, woven through each shoe to bring a style that is totally unique to the PC Dalis. My father’s enormous interest in the history of architecture was always the primary inspiration in his work so it is not surprising that there is an entire pantheon of worthy spirits that hover over the extraordinary Villa Verde, the house he built in Portugal, for close family friends. He became the architect, interior designer, and landscaper. He commissioned the paintings and drawings and designed much of the furniture. Holidaying here as a child I hardly noticed the dramatic classical palladium exterior or lovely moody interiors my father created I just knew there was a very large swimming pool, a wild empty beach and ripe juicy figs just waiting to be picked. I have returned often with my own children, pickling figs, fighting in the pool, riding on those deserted sun-baked beaches. It seemed the ideal place to inspire three new shoes for Penelope Chilvers, who herself always appreciates rich evocative design, history and storytelling. Palladio Pump (Buckle Pump) This classic pump in buttery-soft luxurious leather was created to walk across the terracotta, stone and wood floors of the Palladium Villa Verde, as stylish and season-less as the house itself. Faro Pool Slide (Bahamas Moc-Croc Pool Slide) Bold and solid looking – just as my father designed Villa Verde – ‘The Faro is my own particular design of a classic double strap slide’. Created in deep tobacco brown moc-croc leather, edged with leather piping and built on an anatomic moulded cork sole with adjustable gold buckles for walks on sun baked beaches, or lounging against classical columns waiting for the perfect sunset. Madame G Sandal (Bahamas Sandal) Inspired by the elegant Madame Ghani and her splendid stately home, this is a sandal with smooth edges, and a sleek silhouette. The curved gold ring adornment was added for decorative impact like so many moments found inside Madame G’s home, Villa Verde.

The search for the ‘perfect dress’ is an exciting process, with many brides finding themselves surprised by the styles and materials they fall in love with, versus those they were expecting to choose. While you may have found the perfect dress for you, have you considered your wedding shoes yet? Not only will your wedding shoes finish your bridal look, but they’ll play a bigger part in your big day then you may think. The perfect wedding shoes will influence your stance, style and comfort, as well as ensuring that your dress hangs perfectly. The top 10 things to consider when choosing your wedding shoes: 1. High heels, mid heels, wedges or flats? This is a decision that only you can make. Whatever your choice, we recommend buying for the long-haul. Ideally, the shoes you wear in the morning, will be the shoes you wear as you dance into the night! Wearing heels for the day, before switching into flats for the evening will change the length of your hem and the hang of your dress. For longer dresses this can make a big difference, making the dress too long in the evening when you want to dance and socialise. 2. Quality. For comfort, we recommend buying for quality. Quality wedding shoes are designed for the occasion, knowing brides will be on their feet all day before dancing away the night. They will have additional cushioning and padding under the ball of your foot to avoid aching feet. One poll for the Telegraph stated that brides spend around 15% of the price of their wedding dress on their wedding shoes, so it’s worth investing your time into choosing the perfect pair of shoes for your big day. Be sure to invest in quality, ensuring your wedding shoes are easy to walk in and allow you to glide down the aisle. 3. It’s all about the toe! If you are planning on wearing a long dress for your wedding, then the hem of the dress is usually positioned to lie flush with the floor. As such, the only area of your shoe that will be visible below your dress is the toe of your shoe, as you walk. When choosing the style for your perfect shoe, bear this in mind – it’s not all about the heel, the toe of your wedding shoes is the area that will be most visible! 4. Request a dress swatch. Most brides will buy their shoes and accessories having already chosen their wedding dress. If so, be sure to ask your chosen bridal shop for a swatch from your wedding dress material to take with you when you shop for your wedding shoes! Taking a swatch will ensure you can match your wedding shoes perfectly to your dress, without limiting you to buying your shoes from the same store as your dress. 5. Turn up the heat. One of the key challenges when buying your wedding shoes is ensuring you are buying for the right season. Brides typically buy well in advance of their big day, but unless you are buying a year in advance, this can mean that the season that you are buying in differs from the season your big day will fall in. If you are buying shoes in colder months, be sure to consider the impact that a hotter season may have on your comfort and sizing particularly if you are in the shoes all day. Similarly, if you are buying in hotter weather, be sure to consider that your feet may be smaller in colder months. 6. Consider the terrain. If you are marrying in a country house then you can consider most shoe styles and fabrics, but if you are hoping to stand on grass, or are in a marquee or outdoor setting, then it’s worth giving this some consideration when choosing your wedding shoes. If you want to wear heels but still have photos on the grass, then we’d highly recommend investing in some heel protectors to ensure you don’t sink into the grass. Equally, if you are expecting to encounter mud, then it’s important to consider the fabric of the shoe, as satin fabrics can stain very easily in wet, muddy weather. Although it’s unlikely to upset your big day, it will make your wedding shoes a one-time wear. 7. Buy early This seems like an obvious one! Not only is it important to ensure you have your shoes available for your dress fitting, but this will also give you plenty of time to break them in without your other half seeing! 8. Love them longer! Although your shoes have been specifically purchased for your big day, we love the idea of buying shoes that you can wear again and again! If you are buying wedding shoes you love, don’t resign them to the back of your closet after your big day – focus your search on shoes that you would happily wear again. We love the look and feel of an espadrille shoe that will give you quality and comfort on your big day, but can be worn again, extending the life of your style while also bringing back happy memories from your big day each time you wear them! 9. Colour? I do! Are you keen to add a splash or colour or go classic with white? As with the style of wedding shoe you chose, there’s no right or wrong answer. Gioconda Scott, who grew up in the hills of Andalusia learned to cook while studying in Florence and apprenticing in London at produce-focused restaurants like Clarke’s and Green’s. She brought home ideas from her travels to India, Mexico, and Africa. Spanish food was learned from the local women who worked at her mother’s finca, Trasierra and everything she makes today has her own style made with locally sourced ingredients. She hosted us for our Pre AW22 photoshoot in her beautiful little home in the beautiful village of Carmona just 20 minutes outside Seville. Here is where Gioconda has her catering business and has now opened up her home to be available for short term holiday stays. Here, in her own words, she welcomes us into her world and shares her personal recipe for Tortilla, the perfect summer lunch with our Penelope Chilvers rose table linens, accompanied by a fresh seasonal salad. ` Summer has begun and the garden is an explosion of green and flowers. Earlier this year we planted a kitchen garden and there is now an abundance of radishes & broad beans in season. While Penelope and her team were close by, on location, shooting the new summer campaign in Carmona, we had lunch together with the table laid in her new Penelope Rose table linen, discussing our love of Spain and her long history of working with leather artisans. Warm broad beans with garlic & goats curd, radishes with labneh, anchovies, a baby tomato and herb salad and of course, the ubiquitous tortilla provided the perfect lunch, served with handfuls of fresh mint. There is something extraordinarily special about summer in this part of Andalusia. It feels more intense and overwhelmingly beautiful than the other seasons. We have just had our last bout of rain before the scorching summer months arrive. The orange blossom on the trees surrounding Carmona and Seville is in full bloom and the air is impregnated with this intoxicating scent. In a year where we have sat rooted in one place for so long, we wanted to momentarily slip back to a freer time — one where travel and adventure weren’t such alien concepts. So, this piece is a reflection on the trip Penelope took with Cazenove and Lloyd in September 2019 to Argentina, more specifically to Las Pampas. The Pampas is an equestrian heartland at the centre of the country, dotted with rugged estancias and wild horses. It’s a place of authentic, raw beauty and one of the last enclaves for the country’s cowboy boot aficionados - the gauchos. This visit was a chance to uncover inspiration and to drink in the essence of Argentina’s equestrian style, hopefully bringing some of it back into our new collections. Penelope visited workshops dedicated to ancient leather crafts, ‘filled with trenzados (woven leathers), finer and stronger than I’d ever seen before, with bound edges and plaited intrinsic designs. I watched silversmiths carve organic, flowing grooves into solid-silver studs - from curling ostrich feathers and butterfly wings to wild plant formations, all symbols of their love for the natural world.' This love for the natural world is at the heart of gaucho culture. Traditionally nomadic people, gauchos would have spent days and weeks under the stars, something that feels particularly romantic after the last 18 months! This closeness to nature is a mantra we’ve long been inspired to continue in our designs too. Penelope Chilvers has always designed footwear for travel and adventure — our very first boot, the Spanish riding boot, was made to be just that; something you could wear to kick up dust in for years to come. And all our boots thereafter; our cowboy boots, suede boots and ankle boots have all been built for outdoor living. To be, in true gaucho spirit, kept by the back door for when the moment takes you. We use strong natural materials like oiled suede and leather, that wear beautifully and really last. So you can invest wholeheartedly in whatever is ahead, knowing that like an Argentinian boot, your PCs won’t let you down. We’ve never subscribed to the belief that style and utility are mutually exclusive, Penelope says she found moments of real beauty in the places she visited and the craftsmanship she saw: ‘Whether it was wild daisies placed into a jar on the table or the detailed leatherwork of a rein, there were design touches in even the most simple spaces.’ And this attention to detail inspires our approach too — that desire to decorate life with beauty and colour. We craft stylish details into all our designs; studwork, buckles, pockets of embroidery, playful colourways for boots like the Oscar, alongside traditional stitching for styles like the Tassel boot. Our Sol Pampas slides and Pampas strap, inspired by this trip, are exclusively woven for us, following traditional Argentinian pampas weaves — a tribute to the gaucho weaves that Penelope saw riders wearing over their bombachos. These designs are the essence of style and utility combined; celebrating the natural world, whilst also enabling people to get out into it. They’re our tribute to the true gaucho spirit, and we hope they will empower generations of women to find adventures of their own, (even if we can’t do it from Las Pampas just yet…)

Loafers are a firm favourite for us, and with good reason. Never one to go out of style, and with different heights, buckles, tassels, and finishes, there is one for every wardrobe. But what is it about the loafer that makes it such a timeless character? We thought we would share a little about its heritage and the craftsmanship along the way… The Origins of the Loafer The loafer has a blended origin in many eyes, between Armenia, North America and Norway. The moccasin plays a notable role in the inspiration behind the loafer as we know it, as its origins go back over 5,500 years, the first being found in Armenia. With the seams in such similar places and moulding to the feet to give such comfort when movement was so important to the wearer, it’s a natural inspiration. In the 19th Century in Norway, English men became increasingly taken by the abundance of salmon for fishing, and the local ‘tesers’, slip-on leather shoes that were far more practical than the traditional laced boots they had been accustomed to. The 1930s were when popularity grew. Norwegian shoemaker Nils Gregoriusson Tveranger honed his skills during a seven-year stint in North America, learning the craft and blending the Norwegian essentials with a notable inspiration from moccasins, worn by Indigenous people in North America. The Loafer, Defined It was in the 1930s that the term "loafer" began to be used. The definition? A casual, slip-on shoe for men and women. It was a simple shoe - no laces or buckles, with a low, flat heel. The upper part of the shoe was usually made from a soft suede or leather, and the sole was either made from leather or rubber. This simple design became an increasingly desired wardrobe staple, becoming something of a globally renowned style statement in the 1950s. The Rise of the Loafer “Originally made and worn by Norwegian peasants, and now worn as sports shoes by some of the best dressed men in America.” Advert from the New York Herald, 1936. The 1950s and 1960s saw loafers become an Ivy league essential, worn by students looking for a more laid-back everyday shoe to pair with jeans and sportswear. Meanwhile, in London the tassel loafer was gaining momentum, worn by graduates, socialites and academics alike, firmly positioning it as a style of substance. Around this time the ‘Penny Loafer’ (An inevitable favourite of ours) was coined thanks to the small slit on the instep of the shoe – the perfect size for holding a student’s coin, legend has it this was in case they needed to make an emergency call. As the loafer’s popularity grew, so did the placing of a penny in the shoe's slot, leading to the phrase being recognised far beyond campuses, with the style remaining as beloved as ever. The Italians added their unique touch in the late ‘50s. The brown loafers worn by Brits and Yanks were considered too casual so they decided to focus on a chic black leather, along with an added golden horse bit and other extravagant finishes, elevating the design into European elegance, and a new era of style. We were lucky enough to shoot our Autumn Winter Campaign at the incredible Eastnor Castle, a truly enchanting place that has been lovingly restored by the Hervey-Bathursts, who’ve been involved with Eastnor since the 1600s! We caught up with the owner, James, to learn more about what it means to take custody of a castle... Tell us a bit about Eastnor Castle and your family's history with it? The land has been owned by my mother’s family since the end of the 16th century! The castle itself was built in 1812 and my mother, who grew up here, moved back with my father in 1949 and began the restoration process which kept her busy for over 35 years! Lucy, my wife, is carrying on with the job… What was it like growing up here? Cold! We spent winters close to the Aga or wood burning stoves!! But it was wonderful too, my brother and I were blessed with amazing spaces to play in when visitors weren’t around and when it was wet, we did crazy things like cycling circuits inside the castle and playing badminton in the hall! Which is your favourite room or space in the castle and why? The long library is very special to me. This winter we had the painted ceiling restored with great help from the Heritage Stimulus Fund—these are the projects I really love to be a part of. They bring together teams of talented artisans and experts, who are always fascinating, and the end result is a thing of beauty and history too! We're big believers in looking after beautiful things, but when it comes to something as big as a castle, what does that entail? It really boils down to the fact that nothing is straightforward - take the cleaning, for example, it’s not a simple case of spray and wipe! Our team of cleaners work with triple height ceilings and hundred-year-old antiques, so everything takes time, and inevitably, things get broken when we have events and weddings. My lockdown job was glueing back all the little bits of wood that have been knocked over the years, and getting them back into place on the right piece of furniture! You have turned Eastnor into a modern business, what has this journey been like, and what have you learnt? That, for Eastnor to survive, it must welcome paying guests, weddings and films, and that means having a business in your house. So, much like living in a hotel, you lose some privacy and find the balance between creating a home and a place of work. The castle needs to be both, otherwise, it can be neither... The castle has undergone lots of renovations, have they ever unearthed any secrets or treasures?! We once stumbled upon a small Assyrian bas-relief in the cellar which has been dated to 500 BCE, which is pretty special. I'm waiting for the Antiques Roadshow to come back so I can learn more about its history!! The grounds are beautiful too, how important is preserving the natural space alongside the built space? Very! Initially, this was the 2nd priority as the house commanded a lot of attention, but it’s been lovely to dedicate more time to the grounds in the last 20 years and under the guidance of Tom Stuart-Smith and Lucy, my wife, our arboretum is thriving. Lockdown has seen more and more people buying Grounds-only passes, and we feel very privileged to be able to share our space and see people really enjoying it. What’s next for Eastnor? I think these houses mean different things to different generations. My daughter has lots of ideas, so I’m looking forward to seeing it grow and change. The most important thing is to enjoy it, meet interesting people, who pass through, grow, adapt, restore, share. It’s a huge responsibility, but as I always say to my children, it must never be allowed to ruin your lives! The Long Tassel Boot holds a special place in our hearts, as it was the first boot we ever made. Designed by Penelope as an ode to the Spanish riding boot, which she discovered during her years spent living and working in Barcelona. Here, she would often spend her lunch breaks riding with friends through the Collserola national park in the hills above the city. To do this, she wore Spanish riding boots, handmade by local artisans, using time-honoured methods, and with painstaking care and skill. These boots were famous for their bespoke fit, across the calf, butter-soft leathers and intricate stitching. This awoke the artist in Penelope, to her these boots seemed to epitomise true craftsmanship and an enduring love affair began... Inspired by the Spanish style, and certain that an iteration of this could be popular with friends and family back home, Penelope set out to design what would become our PC signature Long Tassel boot. A piece that holds onto all of its equestrian heritage and romance, to feel as at home on horseback, in rural destinations or in the city. The Long Tassel boot is more than just a brand staple, it’s synonymous with Penelope Chilvers, it’s the birthplace of the brand, and the inspiration for the values and ideals that still sit at the heart of our collections today. The design process for our Long Tassel Boot started, as all our PC production lines do, with local artisans, and that remains how the Tassel Boots are made. We are a brand inspired by Spain and focus on working with traditional makers and experts from across Spain and Portugal, favouring quality and style, over speed. These relationships are important, as designs like the Tassel Boot require real expertise. Each boot is exclusively cut for us, close to the ankle for a more feminine fit and with scalloped detailing at the zip panel and a leather tassel on the zip pull, making them easier to slip on and off. Each pair of Tassel Boots is then partially lined with leather and sewn to our signature Goodyear welted, commando rubber sole, for durability and comfort. All of which requires immense experience and knowledge in the ways of leather. But don’t be misled by its elegant cut, or beautiful detailing, like the Spanish riding boot from which it was inspired, this is a boot to kick up the dust in. They’re built on our hardwearing Goodyear welt soles, which are rubbed lined, for adventure and easily replaceable, thus helping breathe new life into your much loved boots. The leather is purposeful too, built to last and designed to look good as it does! If polished and nourished it will impress for many more seasons ahead. Ever since our first collection, of just 10 styles, the Long Tassel boot, and its cousin the Standard Tassel Boot, have become mainstays of many wardrobes. Including, perhaps most famously, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, who first wore her Tassel Boot back in 2004, and continues to wear them to this day, over 17 years later! They have transcended the many trends and moments that have ebbed and flowed since our inception. Instead, they possess a timelessness; perhaps simply because they’re that great combination of flattering, stylish and practical. Which makes them the perfect pair to slip into the car for a weekend away, or a great choice for an elegant look if you’re unsure of the weather, as the Duchess of Cambridge demonstrated most recently on a tour of Manor Farm, in County Durham. The Tassel Boot is thoughtfully designed in 2 lengths, to suit shorter or longer calves and the collection includes two different colourways, all dyed naturally with vegetable dye leather. We are also very excited to announce that from this October we will be offering you the mainstay Long Tassel boot in a wider calf measurement. Along the way, you'll enjoy some lovely vistas and beautiful buildings. Use The Horse and Groom as your start/finish line. View Route    Stanton Loop from Stanton – Snowshill Arms, via The Mount Inn Distance: 9 miles Duration: 4 hours Stanton is a beautiful Cotswolds village, and The Mount Inn  offers stunning views of the rolling hills. This route is easily accessible but is more of an intermediate level. Worth every minute, and if you start and end at The Mount Inn, you'll have a treat at the finish line. Just keep an eye on their opening hours so you don’t miss out! View Route    The Thames Path Walk Distance: 11.3 miles Duration: 4.5 hours This walk is so picturesque – and at just over 11 miles, it warrants a lovely stop-off. It’s not a challenging route, though the distance might be a challenge for some, but it’s well worth it. We suggest doing the first part of the Thames Path to Cricklade, ending at The Red Lion Pub. For our seasonal snow boot campaign, we thought what better woman to showcase the collection than one who embodies this lust for life through and through; a friend of the brand and our model; Zuzanna Isham; a true #PCpioneer! In a recent road trip travelling westward in the USA we met up with Zuza (@oldgoldritual) in the old mountain town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where the first deep snow of the ski season was settling. We thoroughly loved being part of RHS Chelsea 2024, the best garden show in the world! It was amazing to meet so many wonderful customers and catch up with friends old and new. It was also lovely to see the different ways customers styled their pieces across the week. We were mentioned in the fashion pages of Hello, The Daily Mail and The Telegraph, and have pulled a selection of our favourite looks into the journal below. Our stand was also the recipient of high praise, and the Penelope Chilvers Shoe Shed - designed in collaboration with our talented friends, Butter Wakefield (@butterwakefield) and Sophia Ayrton-Grime (@studioraff), was awarded 4 out of 5 stars by the judges. We love when new styles are embraced, and so it was great to see our new Lace Espadrilles worn so beautifully by @clodagh_mckenna and @louise.thompson Our Gemma Chelsea Platform shoe was also a favourite of the show worn here by Gemma (of course) and the wonderful Trinny, @trinnywoodall. Colour was a firm favourite, with presenter @racheldethame wearing our Girasol Platform in Peony, alongside Penelope herself. Kelly Eastwood @thelondonchatter, who both wore new colourways of our Flat Dali Espadrille.  @humfleming and @gallagher_anais continued the colourful choices, both opting for our High Sevillana Dali Espadrille in pink, with green velvet laces. And the espadrille showcase continued, with @lisa_snowdon and @antheaturner who chose our High Catalina Dali Espadrille in Cherry and our Mary Jane Dali Espadrille in Pink. The event is a lovely celebration of quintessential British-ness, and even the rain couldn’t dampen spirits, with our Mary Jane Dali Espadrilles offering a fabulous pop of pink for Caroline Idiens @carolinescircuits. @streetchloe styling her Black Chicos with a super chic all white look whilst @graceebabes matched hers with a floaty floral dress. @just_belle styling Pool Embroidered Suede Slide and @hazelgardinerdesign pairing our summer yellow Dali Espadrilles with a chic shirt and tailored trousers. Keeping your footwear fresh and fabulous Essential Maintenance Tips for Suede Shoes New suede shoes and boots? Lucky you! Suede is a timeless and stylish material, and we love the finish that suede shoes and boots can give to any outfit. We’ve consulted our experts here at Penelope Chilvers to provide you with five simple maintenance tips that you can apply to keep your suede boots looking fresh, fabulous, and ready to make a statement! 1.Invest in a quality suede brush.  A suede brush is an essential tool for maintaining suede shoes and boots. We recommend using it regularly to gently brush off any dirt, dust, and surface stains that your boots or shoes may have picked up. Brushing helps to restore the suede's texture and removes any superficial marks, giving your shoes a refreshed appearance with each brush. Remember to brush in the direction of the suede grain to avoid damaging the fibres and ensure that the mud has fully fried before attempting to brush this off. 2. Protect your suede boots and shoes with a protector spray. Suede fabric looks fantastic and feels luxurious, but it can be susceptible to water damage, as moisture can cause suede boots to lose shape and develop unsightly water spots. Luckily, help is at hand! Applying a suede protector designed specifically for suede can help to protect your suede shoes and boots and give you peace of mind that your boots are protected. The waterproof spray acts as a barrier, repelling water and helping to maintain the suede's integrity. Before using a suede protector, we’d recommend testing it on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it does not alter the colour or texture of your shoes. Be sure to cover the entire shoe surface evenly, allowing it to dry thoroughly before wearing!  3. Accidents happen, but handle stains with care! Accidental spills and stains are inevitable, but taking prompt action can save your suede boots from permanent damage. The most effective approach is to begin by simply blotting the stain gently with a clean cloth or paper towel, avoiding excessive rubbing that might spread the stain. For dry stains or scuff marks, use a suede eraser or a pencil eraser to gently rub the affected area. Stubborn stains (such as oil or red wine) may require professional cleaning, so consult a suede specialist should you need to. 4. Avoid rain wherever possible While suede shoes can make a bold fashion statement, it's best to avoid wearing them in rainy or snowy conditions. Water can easily penetrate the suede, causing permanent damage. Chose alternative footwear options or apply an extra layer of protection, such as rubber overshoes, to shield your suede shoes from moisture during unpredictable weather. We know the weather is not that easy to predict, so if your suede boots do get wet, allow them to dry naturally. Resist the temptation to use heaters or hairdryers to speed up the drying process as this could lead to water marks. Instead, stuff the shoes with absorbent materials like newspaper or shoe trees to help maintain their shape and absorb moisture. Leave them in a well-ventilated area at room temperature and allow them to dry naturally. Once dry, use a suede brush to restore the texture and remove any water marks. We would recommend re-treating the suede with a protector spray to help re-protect them for your next outing! If your suede shoes come into contact with grit during winter months, they may develop salt marks. These are easily fixed by adding a small amount of washing-up liquid (be sure to choose one that does not contact bleach,) to a damp cloth and gently rubbing the salt mark away. Again, we’d recommend re-protecting your shoes before your next wear. 5. Rotate your shoes Who doesn’t love the feeling of getting a new pair of shoes and boots? We wouldn’t blame you for wanting to wear your new suede boots every day, however bear in mind that frequent wear can cause suede shoes to lose their shape and become worn out more quickly. To extend your love affair and prolong the life of your suede boots, rotate them with other pairs in your collection. Allowing shoes to rest between wears helps them recover from moisture and maintain their form, ensuring you can enjoy them for years to come. This year, we shot our AW24 campaign against the stunning backdrop of the Balcarres Estate in Fife, Scotland, home to the Earl and Countess of Crawford. First purchased by John Lindsay in the 1500s, the estate features breathtaking views of the Scottish countryside and offers cosy cottages where you can stay during your visit. The Balcarres Estate was first purchased in 1586 by John Lindsay, Lord Menmuir. Your family has called this place home for over 20 generations. Can you tell us more about that? Alexander: Yes, Balcarres House is the seat of Clan Lindsay and has been lived in by over 23 generations of our family.  What are some of your favourite historical stories about the estate? Alexander: One of my favourites is about the front gates, known as the “Golden Gates.” Originally painted in gold, they were shipwrecked on their way to Scotland. An irate former Earl ordered them to be dredged up from the wreck. Another story is that Oliver Cromwell stayed at Balcarres for a while. Surprisingly, he didn’t burn the house down, as was his custom. Suggestions are that the Cromwell room still holds his Ghost. You now have four beautiful holiday cottages that are now open for the public to stay in. What are some activities guests can enjoy on the grounds during their stay?   Alexander: Guests can enjoy biking, horse riding, hiking, and golfing at Dumbarnie Links, the estate’s own golf course. What are your favourite spots to visit in the nearby towns? (Pubs, restaurants, activities, etc.) Alexander: I highly recommend the Kinneuchar Inn and the Ship Inn in Elie. Ardross Farm Shop is also a local gem. For activities, St. Andrews, Elie, and Crail are must-visits. You can enjoy a round of golf at Dumbarnie Links or take a walk along the beaches at Elie and St. Andrews. The castle and cathedral at St. Andrews are also worth exploring. The sunrise each morning makes for a perfect backdrop for an early countryside walk. Finding Boots that offer the ‘perfect fit’ can be a challenge, particularly when shopping online. We’ve been measuring our shoe sizes since we were children and, although shoe shape and size can vary, by-and-large we tend to know the shoe size that works for us. But do you know how to measure your boot size for the perfect fit around your calf and ankle too? Working with our industry leading team, we’ve developed this easy-to-use Measure My Boot Size guide to help ensure you can find the perfect boot size for you, whether you’re looking for a pair of Ankle Boots, Cowboy Boots, or Long Length Boots to finish your style. Finding the perfect fit for your boots From long boots to ankle boots, there are three important measurements that you should check before purchasing a new pair of boots online. How to measure your foot length If you are unsure what size boot would fit you best, start by measuring the sole of your foot. The best approach to measure your foot size is to go back to basics. Place a piece of paper on a solid floor and stand your foot in the middle of this. Your weight will need to be baring down on the foot. Mark the tip of your longest toe on the paper, and another mark at the back of your heel. Following this, draw around the outside of your foot, leaving your footprint on the paper. To understand your shoe size, simply measure the longest and widest part of the footprint in millimetres and cross reference this using the sizing chart below (or on the brand website you’re looking to purchase from. It’s that easy! But even with the right shoe size, if a boot doesn’t fit correctly on your ankles and calves then they can be incredibly uncomfortable. So how can you measure this area of the boot and ensure your boots offer the perfect fit? How to measure the correct boot shaft height and width The Shaft of the boot refers to the upper section of the boot (usually this is the area of the boot that has a fastening or opening.) There are two key measurements that will help to identify the right boot fit for you: 1. Firstly, measure the widest part of your calf with a soft tape measure. This will give you a measure as to the width of the shaft that you require, ensuring your boots fit snugly around your calf and leg. 2. To measure the length of boot that is best suited for you, place your tape measure at the bottom of your foot arch. From this point, measure upwards, taking the tape measure towards the back of your leg to the point that your knee bends. This is typically the line of the boot zip. This measurement will give you a view of the length of boot that would best fit your leg length. Finding the perfect size boot for you Taking these three measurements (shoe size, boot shaft length, and calf width,) cross-reference your measurements against the sizing chart for the boots you want to purchase to help ensure you buy the perfect fit for you. Preserving your look There’s no doubt about it, velvet shoes offer the ultimate air of elegance and sophistication, adding a touch of luxury to any outfit. The plush texture and rich colour of velvet make it a popular choice for formal occasions and a great option to style-up any look. However, velvet requires special care to maintain its look and prevent damage. What are the essential maintenance tips you need to know to keep your velvet shoes looking luxurious and ensure they withstand the test of time? 1.Brushing Regular brushing of your velvet shoes will keep the velvet fibres looking fresh and vibrant. Velvet fabrics require a soft-bristled brush, or a velvet brush specifically designed for this purpose to avoid catching and damaging the fabrics with strong brush bristles. Gently brush the surface of the shoes in one direction to remove any dust, dirt, or debris. Be cautious not to scrub, as it can damage the delicate velvet pile. Brushing will help restore the plush texture and maintain the shoes' original appeal. 2. Avoid Moisture and Water Velvet is highly susceptible to water damage, which can cause the fabric to lose its shape and develop water spots. Protect your velvet shoes from moisture by avoiding wearing them in rainy or wet conditions. If they do get damp, allow them to air dry naturally in a well-ventilated area away from direct heat sources such as radiators. It’s easy to panic when on the go but avoid using a hairdryer or exposing them to direct sunlight, as this can damage the fabric and make it difficult to repair.To help minimise impact, we’d recommend using a Protector spray designed for velvet (here at Penelope Chilvers we use Woly in our stores.) We’d recommend topping up your treatment every couple of months to maintain a good level of coverage. 3. Plump them up! Velvet is a delicate fabric so it can easily be flattened. When handling your velvet shoes, be gentle and avoid excessive pressure or squeezing as this could lead to marks or distort the shape of the shoes. If you do find that your velvet shoes become flat or the pile has been rubbed against the grain, we recommend holding the shoe over the steam from a kettle before brushing the shoe. This little trick helps to re-align the fibres in your velvet shoe, leaving them as luxurious as ever! 4. Stain Removal: Accidents happen! You don’t want to spend your time worrying that you’ll damage your new and loved velvet shoes so knowing how to remove stains will help to maintain your velvet shoes and put your mind at rest if any accidents were to happen. For liquid spills, blot the affected area with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel if this is easiest to hand. As with all materials, avoid rubbing, as this may push the liquid deeper into the velvet fabric. Bad spill? If a stain persists, simply consult a professional cleaner with experience in handling velvet fabrics and they will be able to help you to avoid discolouring the area. Think of your velvet shoes as you would a dry-clean only outfit. Enjoy your shoes and style, and when the time comes to clean them just ensure you’re using the right tools for the job to make sure your velvet shoes maintain their style. 5. Take care to store them carefully. Velvet shoes like to be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to avoid damp and sun bleaching. If you can, avoid stacking or compressing them with other shoes, as it can flatten the velvet pile. We have found that a helpful time to maintain the shape of your velvet shoes is to stuff the shoes with acid-free tissue paper or shoe trees. This helps to prevent creasing and ensure the shoes retain their shape, giving you the perfect look – time and again! All good things need a little care! With these few simple tips, your velvet shoes will retain their luxurious quality and remain a standout feature in your wardrobe for years to come. With a focus on artistry, timeless design, and meaningful detail, Penelope's creative approach reflects many of the same values that define Neptune. "I am delighted to be invited to be an ambassador for Neptune," she shares. "As a creative whose work celebrates tradition and craft, there's a lot about my own artistic and creative practice that aligns with Neptune's approach to design and production." This deeply personal project reimagines a modest country kitchen, "more of a cosy parlour for two," as Penelope describes, into a space designed to welcome a growing family. "Suddenly, the house had a new purpose" she explains. Penelope imagined a kitchen with children running around the table constantly, but for this to happen, a wall had to be taken down and the dining room and kitchen merged into one space. When Penelope visited the Neptune showroom in Cheltenham and saw how timeless, long-lasting and sympathetic their designs were for a small Cotswold farmhouse like hers, she started dreaming of designing a kitchen to suit the next 30 years of her life... The design combines Suffolk cabinetry in Polenta, Neptune's warm seasonal shade, with the rich grain of Henley oak, a layered, enduring palette that complements the natural tones of Penelope's home. The family kitchen balances elegance and utility, heritage and future. A standout is a glazed cabinet, personalised by Penelope with a delicate, hand-painted interior inspired by nature. Soft botanical motifs and subtle butterflies nod to the garden and bring a gentle storytelling element. "I wanted to create something that felt intimate and reflective, a moment of nature captured indoors. The butterflies are a symbol of beauty and fragility, and a quiet reminder of the responsibility we all share to protect the natural world. Painting the inside of the cabinet pays homage to nature itself and brings my garden indoors in the winter months." More than a personal design choice, the collaboration reflects a shared belief in creating spaces with meaning, ones that connect generations, honour the landscape, and invite stories to unfold. "And I imagine with hopefulness, as my baby grandchildren grow they will look forward to returning to the house with the 'butterfly cabinet' throughout their childhoods" Penelope shares. Finishing touches, such as the made-to-measure merino wool curtains by British textile brand Tori Murphy, further soften the space and frame the garden beyond, reflecting Penelope's thoughtful, layered approach to home. To celebrate the collaboration, Penelope hosted a lunch in the garden of her freshly designed Cotswold farmhouse.
